WHEN OUR JOBS AND WRITING COLLIDE
Received a plea for help from a writer/FFW reader this week.
The more I read it, the madder I got. Read on and see if you
have the same reaction:
Hi Hope,
I am hoping you (or even your readers) could help with a quandary.
By day, I'm an educated paralegal - however, I lost my job this
past April due to this lovely economy. I was recently passed over
for a job opportunity due to my personal website which promotes
my writing. The employer said it appeared that my "focus" was
not in the legal field.
While I do aspire to one day be strictly a writer, I haven't
even published my first book yet! I need a regular job! I can
appreciate the employer's point of view, and even the fact that
they Googled me. I totally get that in this world of electronic
media. My question is, what do I do with my website? Take it down
until I find a job? Or leave it up, and let it be?

a subscriber for years, and find your content very informational,
and inspirational!

I told Amy to be grateful that the employer showed his hand early.
Imagine the stress of working for such a heavy-handed company.
When I returned to writing in the 90s, I disguised my identity.
I worked the nine-to-five as Cynthia Clark. But when I wrote, I
felt like an entirely different person. Not wanting the boss
and employees I counseled to see my green stories and poems,
I pondered another name. Since Hope was my middle name, and
I'd always loved it more than my first, I assumed it. It stuck.
Only my family calls me Cindy. The rest of the world calls me
Hope. And I love it.
While the name change was marvelous for me, the theory of
hiding our writing side from others shouldn't be forced in
such a situation as Amy described, in my opinion. Employers
ought to be impressed by the talents of its employees,
especially writing. In the legal world, writing is a
cherished ability.
Don't let this situation scare you, and I wish Amy the best
in finding another job opportunity. But writing is yours--
own it. Just don't mention that your goal is to leave the
nine-to-five one day to write full time. Somehow I can see
that statement a bit unsettling to the employer playing second
fiddle to your stories.

Southern Living Magazine. She said while they are no longer
accepting freelance submissions for their back page essay,
they still need pitches in the rest of the magazine. She handles

Hi Hope,
I've been reading your newsletter for years now. I don't
often submit things to publishers, but I like to keep up
with what's available. I used to write for magazines, but
about six years ago I quit to focus on writing novels. I
submitted my first manuscript to fifty publishers. I chose
that number for a reason - if I received fifty rejections,
I would accept that the book was no good and give up. Over
the course of two years I received 41 rejections and six
maybes (that never amounted to anything). I didn't hear
back at all from three. I decided to shelve the book.
Very shortly thereafter I received an email from Tanglewood
Press asking if my book was still available. It had been one
of my earliest submissions. My manuscipt had sat unopened on
the editor's desk for two years, but when she finally read it,
she loved it.
It took another year before I signed a contract with Tanglewood,
and by the time my book, The Rock of Ivanore (a middle grade
fantasy novel) is released in 2011, five years will have passed
since my first submission. It's been a long road to publication,
but worth the wait.
Thank you so much for being my weekly reminder to never give
up. By the way, I love your name - Hope - it's what every
writer needs.

WRITING FOR THE CHRISTIAN CHILDREN'S MARKET: A DUAL MINISTRY

If you are a Christian blessed with writing ability who enjoys
writing for children, I hope you will consider exploring the
specialized market of Christian children's literature as a
possible outlet for some or all of your stories, articles,
and books. Why? All Christians are called to share the Gospel
of Jesus Christ; what better place to begin than with young
Christians just embarking on their own faith journeys. For
me, writing for Christian children is a dual ministry: it
ministers to my soul and spirit and, I hope, to those of my
young readers.
"But, I'm not a theologian," I hear you say. Neither am I.
However, any writer who is strong in his or her faith can
write for Christian children. The writing process--putting
your words and ideas into fiction or nonfiction, magazine or
book format--is the same as that for writing for the general
children's literature market. The added faith element is what
makes Christian children's literature stand apart.
The variety of genres in this specialized market is as diverse
as in the secular market--fiction and nonfiction, magazines and
books, plays, games, activities, crafts, journals, and so forth.
Some added outlets include Bible studies, Sunday school take
home papers, and prayer books. And, in addition to the desire
to entertain and educate children through the written word,
Christian writers share the love of Christ--whether stated or
implied--in all that they pen.
As with any type writing, we need to equip ourselves with
necessary supplies and resources. In addition to the obvious
computer, paper, dictionary, and thesaurus, Christian writers
should have handy their Bibles, Sally E. Stuart's Christian
Writers' Market Guide (published annually), and The Christian
Writer's Manual of Style (Robert Hudson, Editor, published
and updated periodically by Zondervan), which includes
information on how to properly cite Scripture, when to
capitalize terms such as "gospel" and "lord," and other
necessary stylistic information unique to this market.
Ideas for Christian children's stories, articles, and books
abound. If you have trouble beginning, start with your own
faith community. Does it furnish take-home papers for the
youth? Who publishes these? Read several copies. Can you
conceive of a good story that illustrates a Bible truth,
one that would lead to a few thought questions after being
read? These small papers welcome good writers.
If your church or youth department has a library, take a
look at its offerings for children. Or make a trip to your
local Christian bookstore and browse in the children's
department. Hopefully, you will begin to form a vision for
your ministry, including genre, format, and age group for
which you might write. Just one caution: If you're not
strong in your own faith, and/or if you are not in touch
with Christian children on a regular basis, this might not
be the market for you to target. In addition to writing
ability and market savvy, strong faith and a love for and
knowledge of children are essential for establishing your
ministry as a Christian children's writer.
As I type this article, my computer just "dinged," announcing
the arrival of a new email. It's an acceptance for a quiz I
submitted from an editor of a Christian teen's magazine
published in Ireland. Spreading Christian values to children
around the world really makes my spirit sing! If you decide
to try your hand at writing for the Christian children's
market, I can't promise you riches of the pocketbook, but
I can guarantee you spiritual enrichment; that is worth so
much more.

If the books touch upon writing, I give them a go. Never have
I read a writing how-to book as complete as this one. In one
evening I read it cover to cover, and I don't write Christian
Children's works. Sowing Seeds: Writing for the Christian
Children's Market, is as comprehensive a writing book as I've
ever seen. As I read pages, I made a mental list to note if the
author mentioned this or mentioned that. In the end, I had no
question left unaddressed. I'm amazed there's no previous book
on writing for this niche. That said, I'm glad this is the
first one. It has set a high bar, and I feel it will become
the bible for Christian writers everywhere."

create new partnerships. The travel fund - STEP beyond - stimulates
and supports cross-cultural creative projects in the wider European
neighbourhood. It encourages artists and cultural workers to
explore unfamiliar territories, network with each other, discover
different ways of working and, most importantly, collaborate.
Offers grants between 350 and 700 Euros to cover travel
costs for travelling throughout Europe. The grants are open to
applicants in the first 10 years of a professional career in

restaurant? Very fresh and of-the-moment.

supporting copy. The secret to Boudro's guacamole on the
Riverwalk? Orange juice, not lime juice. The secret to the

(though could be) as you ride through the state. Good enough

Pick a subject and explore it with your reader, informing

WHY ADVERTISE IN FUNDSFORWRITERS?
For my first advertising for my fledging business I needed to
make strategic choices within a very limited budget. I chose
to advertise in two places: the Funds for Writers (FFW)
newsletter and a major writer's magazine (circulation of 100,000).
FFW far outperformed the magazine! From my first FFW ad I got an
immediate and enormous spike in traffic to my web site and within
24-hours had more than 100 people sign up on my website. And that
was just the first ad! Over the course of the six-week ad campaign
I saw a noticeable spike in traffic after each ad hit people's
inboxes and in total garnered at least 500 new sign-ups.
