WOW- WHAT A POLITICAL WEEK
Yeah, I know, you're tired of the rhetoric, promises and little
white lies that come with American politics. But as my family
watched the television and computer screens for this or
that statistic, laughing or fussing at one pundit or another,
something jumped out at us that made me want to laugh at
first, then shake my head in wonder.
Around 1 AM (I go to bed between 2 and 3 AM), the banner
online headlines read this on the three top news stations
home page:
FOX - REPUBLICANS CAPTURE HOUSE
MSNBC - DEMOCRATS TO RETAIN CONTROL OF SENATE
CNN - DEMS HOLD SENATE - GOP TAKES HOUSE
If that doesn't play to the readership, I don't know what does.
FOX catered to the right, MSNBC kissed the left, and CNN rode
the middle.
That shows the power of writers. We can take the same information
and spin it in many directions. If you stop and ponder that for
long, you recognize the responsibility that comes with our
profession. We can explode a message into something bigger with
simple omission of a few choice words. We can dilute the point
by adding a phrase.
No writing is exempt. Fiction, poetry, scripts and nonfiction
rise and fall in their effect on people based upon the words
we choose. Of course, that also means we are good or bad,
enlightening or boring, based upon that same ability to
select phrasing. We can hurt, help, build, destroy, educate,
humiliate, or create emotions, actions and reactions.
Some shiver at the chance to cut into people with sharp
sentences. Others fear writing memoirs for fear of impacting
others. A few writers are crafty enough to alter the course
of others' futures.
Think about all that when you next sit down to write.
What do you want your writing to do to people's lives?
If you can't answer, if you don't know, maybe it's time
to stop writing until you do. Write with purpose. Realize
the impact. The world will benefit more when you do.

Hi, Hope!
I just wanted to let you know about a grant available through
the Ontario Arts Council. It's the Northern Writers' Works in
Progress grant, and the deadline is December 3rd, 2010.
This grant is available only to writers writing in English
in the Northeast, Northwest and Far North of Ontario. The
amount is $12,000 to fund the completion of a book length
work of fiction, non-fiction or poetry. Full guidelines are

There's also the Writers' Works in Progress with three
deadlines per year - October, February and June. Again this
grant is available to Ontario writers and is $12,000 to
complete a book-length work. Full details at Writers' Works

I just - and I mean just - found out that I've been awarded
one of the WIP grants. I won in the all-Ontario competition,
June 2010 deadline. This will allow me to write for almost
a year without worrying about money! Is that a gift, or what?
I received it to complete my YA novel, provisionally titled
"The Swan Harp".
I'm flying! Anyway, I promised John Degen at the Arts Council
that I would do what I could to publicize the Northern deadline,
because it's new and relatively unknown. It seems like something
that would be appropriate for your newsletter.

Choosing the Right Freelance Editor for You

To get an edge, many writers hire freelance editors to review
and edit their submission packages. But how does one choose
the right editor?
First, identify which service you need.
Book doctoring: With this editing/rewriting hybrid, a pro
dives in and "fixes" your manuscript rather than showing you
how to fix it, as editors do. This is best for those unable
to write a publishable book (for lack of time or skill), and
who want to get their book out ASAP.
Developmental/substantive editing: This service examines
issues such as plot and character development, dialogue,
pace, and audience suitability. You'll get the big-picture
feedback you need to tackle the next draft. [Some consider
"substantive editing" the same as "line editing" (see below).]
Copyediting/line editing: Copyeditors catch inconsistencies
and address stylistic concerns, organization, clarity, grammar,
and punctuation. Sometimes "line editing" refers to a more hands-
on service that includes light rewriting. Your manuscript will
be polished at the technical level, but you won't learn what's
working (or not) story-wise.
Proofreading: Proofreading is for material about to go to press,
not manuscripts in the submission stage. Proofreaders examine
proofs for outstanding errors and layout issues such as
incorrectly aligned margins. This is useful for self-publishing
authors and should be done before sending files for printing.
Next, assemble a list. Ask for referrals or search online
databases, such as Mediabistro's Freelance Marketplace
(www.Mediabistro.com/fm), the Freelancers Union Yellow Pages
(www.freelancersunion.org), and the Editorial Freelancers
Association directory (www.the-efa.org/dir). Use keywords
like "legal thriller" or "nonfiction book proposal" for best
results.
Finally, narrow the field. Acquiring editors are skilled at
evaluating book proposals and manuscripts---they also edit and
oversee projects through to print, often participating in
marketing and publicity. Acquisitions editors are similar, but
at some companies these "editors" only acquire, passing
manuscripts to freelancers or coworkers for everything else.
Copyeditors are masters of basic writing skills, but have
nothing to do with acquisition or other parts of the publishing
process.
Most writers are better off working with someone who's actually
signed and edited books for a publisher or literary agency. But
if you just need a review for technical prowess and organization
issues, choose a copyeditor.
A few more tips:
Make sure you're ready: If you seek help too early in the
writing process you may pay to bring your manuscript up from
a D to a B, instead of a C to an A.
Do your research: Run Internet searches. Check references.
Visit the WritersWeekly.com forum, "Whispers and Warnings,"
for red flags (www.writersweekly.com/whispers_and_warnings.php).
Know what to expect: Get a detailed, signed agreement before
you pay (it's common to pay up to 50 percent up front). At
the least, make sure the service, total cost, deadline and
any caveats are spelled out clearly in an e-mail. Retain all
rights---work should be "for hire" only.
Know your budget: Book doctors and developmental editors
with a decade or more of professional staff experience often
charge upwards of $100 per hour. But those with less experience
or living in inexpensive locales may run you as little as $40
per hour. The hourly rate for copy editors is typically $20 to
$65; proofreaders, $12 to $20.

If your candidate charges less than standard, consider what
you're giving up for the lower price. But don't let price alone
guide you: Publishing moves you from hobbyist to author; authors
are professionals. You must be willing to invest in your success.

Deadline January 31, 2011. The contest is open to anyone
writing in English who has not yet published a book of 45
pages or more in the genre of application, except faculty
and administrators employed by the University of New Orleans.
Submission Limits and Format: Prose submissions should not
exceed 4,500 words (about 15 pages double spaced). Prose
submissions may be excerpts from longer works or a complete
story or stories, so long as the length limit is adhered to.
Poetry submissions should not exceed 5 pages and may include
a maximum of 3 poems. The contest is open to writers of fiction,
nonfiction, and poetry, and one winner in each genre receives
a complete fee waiver to our summer study abroad workshops in
Edinburgh, Scotland (valued at over $3,000), plus publication
in The Pinch journal.
