KINDLE AND YOUR EBOOK
Amazon has evolved from a bookstore to a literal world of its
own. Though Apple competes and the iPad sizzles, most people
gravitate to Amazon to buy a book. It's amazing at how many
nonwriters think you aren't a writer unless you are on Amazon.
Somehow that gives you credibility.
So naturally you want to check out how to publish your ebook
via Amazon's Kindle format. The ebook would be in Digital
Text Platform format, which is the only format available
via the Kindle Store. People can now read the Kindle format
on Kindles, computers, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Macs,
Blackberries, and Androids.
Just like Smashwords has a publishing guide, Kindle has
information available to walk you through the process.
Frankly, I preferred Smashword's consolidated guide I could
print off, study and mark up. Amazon has "help documents"
and a forum of current Kindle publishers who can offer
assistance.
http://forums.digitaltextplatform.com/dtpforums/index.jspa
The help documents go into the details of formatting. They
accept html, doc, pdf, epub, txt and mobi files, but they
prefer html. They ask that doc files be changed to html
before being uploaded and converted to dtp (Amazon's format).
Be careful going into your book and amending html coding
before uploading the file. Make sure you have a comfort
level with such alterations.
They have a six minute video tutorial on the 70% royalty
option, which is elementary and easy to follow. Basically,
you opt for 35% royalties or 70%. Duh, huh? The difference
occurs when you set the price of your book. Set the price
between $2.99 and $9.99 and you receive 70%. Charge over
$9.99 and you receive 35%. The 70% was limited to books sold
to U.S. customers until this week, but now it's open to
transactions in the UK.
I'm not fond of the help document setup. It makes for lots
of flipping around, seeking answers. I've heard from authors
who've published on Kindle that the Smashwords formatting
guide is great for putting your manuscript into shape
for Kindle as well. And there's always the option of paying
someone to format your book for you for roughly $150 on
the average. Nonfiction can run more. Examples are:
http://www.ebookgraphics.com/index.html
http://www.ebookconversion.com/
http://www.ebookarchitects.com/conversions/services.php
http://www.ebookhands.com/
Some authors will tell you that Smashwords is easier and
others will say Kindle. In the long run, consider doing
both.
As I said earlier, ebooks are not a shortcut to becoming
successfully published. They are just a different method.
Yes, ebooks are selling like crazy, and now is a good time
to test the waters. But never let your sights stray off
the basic requirements of a good book:
1. Good writing.
2. Good appearance (i.e., cover and formatting)
3. Good marketing.
Your ability to make sales determines your success, and
no technology can do that for you.

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
RE: The article in last week's newsletter.
Dear Hope,
I had won several awards for writing short stories about my
life. When one of my friends suggested that I compile the
stories into a book, that's what I did.
My "Thursday's Child", which is published by Echelon Press
contains 43 factional short stories based on episodes of my
life. The publication of this "Thursday's Child" is unique
because the general rule in publishing is that an author only
gets to publish a collection of short stories or material that
is biographical or semi-biographical after that author has
had numerous best selling novels on the market.
On the Killer Nashville short story panel I was asked how I
pitched the book to editors. Instead of saying that I have a
short story collection, I said, "I could be Stephanie Plum's
alter ego. People who hear my stories either laugh or say
'Thank God it wasn't me'."
"Thursday's Child will be released on December 15, 2010. It
will be available through Echelon Press, Amazon, and B & N.
Now I am working on the sequel, "Another Thursday's Child".
So I never stop writing about myself.
Best wishes,
Elaine Sandra Abramson
Lucrative Ways to Re-live Your Vacation
By Susan Sundwall
I've been suffering from that peculiar lethargy that follows
a summer vacation. However, now that I'm sitting back and
recalling my delightful coast-to-coast trip the writer radar
in me is rising. That vacation I just took included several
plane trips. For many frequent fliers the Sky Mall catalog
and in-flight magazines provide a welcome distraction from
the "I know this already," mentality associated with the
flight attendant's safety talk. A little post-vacation research
on the Alaska Airlines' magazine I'd casually thumbed through
revealed that the magazine is 75% freelance written. Another
Alaska Air Group airline, Horizon Airlines, has its own
magazine that is 80% freelance written. I love it.
These magazines, as well as the ones highlighted below, favor
articles about events, businesses, personalities, outdoor
activities, and dining opportunities in and around the
destinations they serve. Some, like United's Hemispheres
Magazine, have an online form where you can pitch your story
and send it along. How cool is that? So take your business
acumen, your knowledge of events, love of fine dining and
affinity for personality profiles and submit in writing to
one of these:
American Way Magazine
Delta Sky
http://www.alaskaairlinesmagazine.com/contributor/
Horizon Air Magazine
http://www.horizonairmagazine.com/contributor/writers.php
Hemisphere Magazine
http://www.hemispheresmagazine.com/talk-to-us/
And then we have all your entertaining tales of travel. I
recently sold a story compilation resulting from three
unique encounters with some fellow travelers during other
coast-to-coast trips. Close encounters in airports and on
planes resulted in a middle-aged bride, a Roman Catholic
priest, and a regular guy from Maine making it into this
compilation. It took a few years to gather them, but I
didn't let the experiences go to waste. I put each encounter
into a file and eventually had enough to write a complete
essay. Once published, I have another market targeted for
the same piece. You've got similar stories in your noggin,
too, I'll just bet. Try them for one of these markets:
Backpacker Magazine - Pays .60 - $1 per word
http://www.backpacker.com/guidelines/
GoNomad - Pays $25 per feature
Moving right along - what tips have you picked up while
traveling? Have you figured out a way to pack 12 T-shirts,
a little black dress and your laptop into a makeup bag?
Maybe you're an expert on kid friendly travel snacks, or
what airports have the cleanest restrooms. Without realizing
it, you've probably got a mental list of what has worked for
you as a traveler. Write up your how to, when to, or where
to and sub it to one of these:
In every season of the year, in good times and bad, people
travel. The planes I flew on this summer were all booked to
capacity. In any one of the above markets you might just be
the one to supply eager travelers with before, during and
after reading. Get to it.
