PUBIT!
Now comes Barnes & Noble, doing its part to jump in the
midst of ebook publishing. B&N announced PubIt! for authors
wishing their ebook published and sold in the B&N store.
I can't tell you one way or the other about its ease of
use or success for authors, because they just announced
this program last week. But B&N is huge, and you know that.
Therefore, I expect them to succeed at this endeavor. They
won't knock Amazon/Kindle out of the saddle, but they will
grab their share of the ebook market.
The royalties run like this:
eBooks priced between $2.99 and $9.99 earn 65% of List Price.
eBooks priced at/below $2.98 or at/greater than $10.00 (but
not more than $199.99 and not less than $0.99) earn 40%.
They go further to state that the author/publisher will ensure
that the eBook's List Price at any other retailer, website,
or sales channel isn't lower than at B&N, and is no greater
than the eBook's print edition (if applicable). As with
Smashwords and Kindle, you pay nothing to publish via PubIt!
Users must have tight ties with the U.S. in the form of a
U.S. bank account, credit card and tax ID number.
PubIt! eBooks are sold via B&N venues. Customers can download
and read on a NOOK eBook reader or on a PC, iPad, iPhone, iPod
touch, or Android smartphone enabled with free NOOK eReading
software.
One of the differences in dealing with B&N is the LendMe
program where customers can share their purchased eBooks
once for up to 14 days. All PubIt! books qualify for this
function. Customers can also download up to five percent of
an PubIt! eBook before making a purchase. Not sure I like
that, but in reality it's probably no more than one or
two chapters.
What remains to be seen is the user-friendly ability of
PubIt! and its ePub formatting. I began reading the ePub
Formatting Guide and got lost in the jargon. The basic
MS Word formatting was simple. B&N will convert your Word
document to ePub for no charge.
Note that B&N reserves the right to reformat your eBook,
which can result in unintentional errors. You only have the
option of removing the book, correcting and republishing
it, but you cannot hold B&N responsible. On the other hand,
they reserve the right to correct any errors they find in
the document you send to them. Do not, however, expect them
to edit your manuscript.
This comment in the Terms and Conditions disturbed me:
Publisher acknowledges and agrees that one hundred percent
(100%) of every eBook submitted by you can be viewed via
Wifi within the confines of a physical Barnes & Noble store
and within the reach of such store's Wifi.
So there you have it, another ebook publishing option.
You can self-publish or your traditional publisher can
sell your ebook for you via Pubit!, as well as Smashwords
or Amazon/Kindle.
Ebooks are here, folks. Get used to it. Enjoy the new market!
NEXT WEEK . . . a break from ebook-talk. We discuss
writing contests, because the 9th Annual FundsforWriters
Essay Contest is in its final two weeks, and you don't
want to let that deadline slip by.
Hope

SUCCESS STORY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hope-
Just wanted to let you know that many years of hard work (we've
been writing our Angel Animals books since 1996) really can pay
off. We're probably like most of the people who get your
newsletters. My husband works a day job. Income from writing
isn't enough to pay the bills but has definitely helped. We've
had our share of health challenges, job losses, and setbacks,
but we keep plugging along and are now writing our fourteenth
book. New World Library is our publisher.
I won't say that we've "made it" into the big time, although
we've had some wonderful support. The letters we receive from
people who say our books have helped them cope with pet loss,
inspired them to volunteer or pursue careers in animal rescue,
or gave them hope and entertained them have kept up our spirits
when things got tough. We started this type of writing as empty-
nesters in mid-life because we wanted to bring more love into
the world, and that's exactly what has happened.
This week, we had a big boost when O Magazine recommended our
new book, Dogs and the Women Who Love Them for its November
issue. Here are the links to it:
www.oprah.com/omagazine/7-Books-for-Dog-Lovers/7
and http://www.oprah.com/omagazine/7-Books-for-Dog-Lovers/print/1
Betty White, Wendie Malick, Vanessa Williams, American Humane
Association, and others have endorsed the book, too.
We were so thrilled and excited about the Oprah recommendation.
I read your newsletter every week and wondered if you would
enjoy hearing about our good news. Then I opened up this weekend
edition and saw the photo of you and your dog. You definitely
fit the profile of the amazing women in our book. Thanks for all
you do to encourage writers.
Take care,
Linda Anderson
FREE BOOK TRAILERS
by Stephanie Suesan Smith
Congratulations, you sold your book. Now you have to publicize
it. Why not use a book trailer? While some book trailers cost
loads, a perfectly serviceable trailer can be made for free.
First, plot the trailer. Hit the highlights, introducing the
main characters and setting the scene. In fact, sidle right up
to the defining moment, then stop. A cliffhanger is followed
by a release date or how to purchase the book. The credits
contain your website, blog, and social media addresses.
Find or take pictures to illustrate the trailer. Places such as
istock.com and flickr have royalty free pictures. Make sure the
people in the pictures resemble the book characters. Readers
notice if the video has a woman with red hair and the book has a
woman with brown hair.
Decide on a program to use. Windows Live Movie Maker is on
Windows Vista and Windows 7. iMovies is the Mac equivalent.
Slideroll is on the web and can be used no matter what computer
you have.
I used Windows Live Movie Maker, so these directions are for
that program. First, arrange the photographs in order on the
story board. Second, add text either as captions or credits.
Captions can go anywhere in the frame of the picture. Credits
roll up from the bottom and disappear over the top, like the
end credits of a movie.
Make a text-ready slide. To avoid obscuring the pictures with
text, make a text-ready slide for the words and place it before
your picture. Any picture editing software will do that. Just
open a new page, select an 8X10 area, fill it with the color
of choice, and save it as a jpg file. Presto, a text -ready slide.
Music is essential. Find it by typing the phrase "royalty
free music" into your favorite search engine. Most songs are
about 3 minutes long. Pick one that goes with your story. There
will be an MP3 file you can download that contains the song in
a format your computer can understand.
Bring the trailer to life. Windows Live Movie Maker has a
button in the top menu that says "auto movie." Click it,
add the music, and it will automate your movie, adding in
the transitions, some motion, and stretch the scenes to match
the music. If the credits roll by too fast, the slides change
before you can read the words, or something is way too slow,
you can control the individual slide's speed.
Ask your critique group to critique the trailer by uploading
it to YouTube as a private file and inviting them to view it.
Movie Maker has a button you click to do that. The file will
be large and can take up to 30 minutes to upload, depending
on the speed of your connection and the size of the file.
You must first register and get a free YouTube account to do
this.
Distribution. Your friends will likely find some errors, or
places the film is too fast or slow, so be ready to fix those
issues. After everything is ready, head over to Tubemogul
and sign up for a free account as a content distributor.
There you can upload your trailer to around 15 or 20 different
places around the web where people go to view trailers.
Tubemogul does have premium services that cost money, but I
did not use them.
Does this work? Head over to YouTube and judge for yourself.
This video of mine got picked up by the Irish TV computer
channel. If I can do it, so can you.
THE TWO RAVENS PRESS
http://www.tworavenspress.com/
---
'Contemporary, cutting-edge, innovative, risk-taking,
challenging' - these are the kinds of words we use throughout
this website, and as we move into our smaller, more focused
2011 list and beyond, these are the ONLY kind of books we're
interested in, whether we're talking about fiction (short,
novel-length or novellas), nonfiction, poetry or anything that
falls between these classifications. We're interested in books
that make a difference; books that show us a new way of looking
at the world, a new way of being in an ever more challenging
environment; books that take chances with style, language,
structure, narrative...
When it comes to fiction, we're more Cormac McCarthy than
Jodi Picoult, more Samuel Beckett than Ian McEwan. We don't
do conventional literary fiction about everyday concerns and
family crises; we don't want satires, either. We want fiction
that deals seriously and in new ways with big issues, with the
fragility of civilization, with new ways of being in a crumbling
world.
---
Most interested in representing literary fiction and general-
interest nonfiction. Query by email with a description of the
project and of yourself. Will ask to see more if interested.
Fiction manuscripts should be complete when you first query;
a short (2-3 pp. at most) synopsis would be very helpful.
Nonfiction need not be complete, but please be ready to send a
book proposal that includes an overview of the project, a
profile of competing or similar titles, an author bio, and
sample chapters. No screenplays, children's books, romance,
or science fiction. Memoirs and most genre fiction (other than
crime or noir) are a serious long shot, too.
