BECOMING FAMOUS

I read a blog called IttyBiz. At first glance, it's not much
use to writers, but periodically it screams with some fantastic
advice that coincidentally applies to us. If you want to glance
at the blog, go to http://ittybiz.com/ .

Recently it had great advice on businesses becoming noticed
online, and what it takes as an entrepreneur to become rich
and famous. Every one of the concepts applied to freelance,
nonfiction, even fiction writers, and I had to share. Frankly,
I consider these itemized suggestions mandatory to the writer
who wants to generate enough money to make a living at the craft.

1. Have enough passion that you appear alarming and almost creepy.
   Case in point . . . J.A. Konrath, author.

2. Know or learn more about the topic than 98% of the population.

3. Choose a brandable attribute somewhere between Out of the
   Ordinary and Outright Offensive. Stand out, people.

4. Treat your brand as if it were normal. Don't treat it like
   a publicity stunt.

5. Work yourself silly at this and nothing else for nine to
   36 months. You'll have ups and downs, and 90 percent of those
   who start, quit during a lull. Only the diligent rise up.

6. Sell something the whole time you're climbing this ladder.
   Even if you think it's not working, stick with it and keep
   selling.

You can't be like everyone else. It's that simple. It's hard
enough to find you amongst the sea of writers in existence.
When everyone is tan, how do you become the one dressed in red?

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Hope -
Just wanted to share with you the small successes and synchronicities
of this writer's life. This past Monday I meditated on Health Wealth
and Happiness. The next day I braved the heat and attended a Writer's
Group at my local library. Turns out I was the 'most accomplished'
of the three attendees by virtue of being previously paid- and self-
published. I am now the 'leader' of this fledgling group. The next
morning I opened an e-mail from the Ligonier Valley Writers'
Conference - I was awarded a scholarship to same. Having discovered
that conference thru you I thought it only proper you should know
of my award.
Small steps, small successes, large rewards...
"The Portfolio Resume"
by Suchi Rudra
As my freelance writing portfolio began to expand substantially,
I realized that my traditional resume wasn't sufficiently
displaying my writing experience. That's when I discovered the
portfolio resume--a freelance writer's way of displaying the
range of her work, listing the variety of publications (both
print and online) where her work has appeared.
As in a traditional resume, give your contact info first
(name, address, phone number, email address), but feel free
to include your website and blog as well.
State your OBJECTIVE AS A FREELANCE WRITER.
List your QUALIFICATIONS as bullet points. Here you can
include your areas of expertise, like travel or business or
fashion, and also mention any other skills that make you
unique as a freelance writer.
List your FREELANCE CLIENTS (places where your work has been
published, including websites, blogs, magazines, newspapers,
etc) next, in alphabetical order. I also added a note beside
the heading: (* denotes current clients), which is very helpful,
since this list is in alphabetical order--not chronological
order like a traditional resume. However, if you think a
chronological ordering is more relevant for your work, you can
create a CURRENT CLIENTS section, and have a PAST CLIENTS
section beneath that. This simply depends on your experience
and what you want to emphasize: quantity or quality. And of
course, it is not necessary to list every single client you've
ever written for, especially since this will make your resume
too long. (Try to stay within a one-page limit, but 1.5 pages
isn't too terrible either, as long as the info is relevant.
Plus, most people in the freelance universe don't print out
resumes nowadays, so this acts more as an online resume, not
as a hard copy resume.) Highlight publications that are big
names and also that show off your areas of expertise. Of course,
if you are applying for a freelance gig that is all about food
writing, and you usually leave off your food writing client, be
sure to put it back in before you send off your portfolio resume.
You can add entries under a STAFF EXPERIENCE heading if you've
had several full-time, office jobs that you consider important
to your experience as a writer (reporter, magazine editor).
Insert an AWARDS/COMMENDATIONS section here if you wish.
As with a traditional resume, list your EDUCATION information
now, keeping it short and sweet. Freelance clients usually focus
on your experience anyways, since freelance writers tend to come
from a variety of educational backgrounds.
Last but not least, list any ADDITIONAL SKILLS that might be
required for certain gigs, including foreign languages, computer
skills, design/photography skills, etc. This is where I list my
published novel, to illustrate my skills as a creative fiction
writer.
Some freelance writers insert links to online clips in a WRITING
SAMPLES section instead of or after the ADDITIONAL SKILLS section.
If you are already attaching clips or inserting links into your
cover letter, then it is better to leave this section off in
order to avoid repetition and keep the resume as brief as possible.
Just as it's not advisable to send a generic cover letter to every
freelance writing gig you apply for, it's also not a good idea to
send the same exact version of your portfolio resume along with
your cover letter. Every gig has different requirements, and
especially if you have multiple areas of expertise and experience,
you will need to edit your portfolio resume each and every time
you apply for a new gig. Or, for example, if you have three clear-
cut areas of expertise, make three different portfolio resumes,
one for each genre of writing. As for references, create a
separate document of two or three references that you can copy-
paste into your resume, only if the client specifically requests
references.
