Meet Sherlock. He's a five-month-old Buff Orpington rooster we adopted
this week. He now lives with three nine-month-old Buff Orp hens (i.e., twice his age).
He's still learning to crow, and he's trying hard to be a grown-up rooster now
that he's penned with his three lady friends. Someone in my household labeled
their home the Cougar Coop.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT OUTSIDE OF WRITING SKILLS

We often think of career development as writing conferences.
We don't consider auditing college classes, attending community
centers, even online classes in grammar. Another resource for
self-improvement in our profession is the arts commission.
Even with their budgets cut to the bone, most of them are still
holding free classes and presentations about grants and
entrepreneurialship.

We forget to nurture our business side, usually our weakest
link. How many times have you put off your accounting, taxes,
marketing or business plan? How many of you don't know what
a business plan is?

We can't be financially successful as artists unless we can
manage our business affairs. That's why you need to get in
touch with your state or regional arts commission and discover
what they have to offer in terms of career development.

The following opportunity is open in North Carolina. These
are free or cheap as dirt and worth your while. Learn how to
find a fiscal agent, handle financial issues and promote
yourself from a renown representative from the NY Foundation
for the Arts.

The Durham Arts Council, in partnership with the The Durham
Art Guild, The Town of Chapel Hill Office of Public Art, the
Orange County Arts Commission and the Chatham County Arts Council,
is pleased to join with the New York Foundation for the Arts

for individual artists in all disciplines and representatives of
small/emerging arts organizations.

The NYFA programs presented for Triangle artists include an all-
day workshop, a two-hour lecture, and individual consultations
and will be conducted by the NYFA Program Officer for Fiscal
Sponsor Programs. All events will take place at the Durham Arts
Council building at 120 Morris Street in downtown Durham. For

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Hope,
After seeing the Smories.com ad for its children's story
competition on your website, I took a leap of faith and
entered "I Am Sad - Mommy Goes Back to Work", a story which
I wrote for my granddaughter, age 3, last year.
It was my first entry ever in a competition. I did not win,
but I was thrilled to be short-listed, in the top 50 of over
400 stories submitted. This has given me the confidence to
start searching for a literary agent who handles children's
books. My first query has gone out.
Thank you for providing such a rich resource for writers.
Sincerely,
Janice McAlpine
Eight Good Markets for Writers Abroad
by Chantal Panozzo
Whether you're living abroad or just dreaming of it, the
following are good markets to consider for your work. They
are especially advantageous if you're already living the
international writing life--or if you just can't seem to stop
traveling.
1) Glimpse.org
http://glimpse.org/correspondents/
Supported in part by the National Geographic Society, glimpse.org
hires a group of writers each fall and spring to serve as
correspondents for their respective countries. The program is
open to anyone between the ages 18 and 34 who is working,
volunteering, or studying outside their home country for at
least 10 weeks. Besides a stipend and guaranteed publication on
glimpse.org, correspondents also have the possibility of being
featured on NationalGeographic.com.
2) Travelers' Tales
http://travelerstales.com/
Chances are, you've probably read a Traveler's Tales publication.
With over 100 titles in print and publishing at the speed of six
to eight books a year, Travelers Tales is a market that wants
your stories about the places you've been (or the places you've
lived). They also sponsor several contests.
3) The Christian Science Monitor
http://www.csmonitor.com/About/Contributor-guidelines
If you live in a foreign country, you'll have a different
perspective on things abroad--and also on things at home. For
both, an international newspaper like the Monitor might be a
place for your work--whether it's an op-ed on how it feels to be
a Muslim living in Switzerland after the recent Minaret ban or a
personal essay on raising a child that grows up to speak a
language that you will never quite master.
4) WorldHum.com
http://www.worldhum.com/
First person travel narratives, rants about any travel subject,
or how-to stories that reveal ways to dive deep into cultures
around the world, as a writer abroad, you'll have an advantage
when it comes to pitching these. Not to mention, World Hum has
gained quite the reputation since its founding in 2001. Stories
published on World Hum have also appeared in "The Best American
Travel Writing" anthologies. Check out the submission guidelines.
5) Expat Lit
http://www.expatlit.com/
Expat Lit is a new literary magazine designed especially for
writers living abroad. The journal is published twice a year in
the spring and fall and they accept short fiction, essays, poetry,
and visual art. While they don't yet pay their contributors, they
do accept previously published work.
6) Transitions Abroad
http://www.transitionsabroad.com/information/writers/index.shtml
http://www.transitionsabroad.com/information/writers/expatriate_writing_contest.shtm
Transitions Abroad is a webzine for people living (and traveling)
abroad. Besides sponsoring several yearly contests including the
Expatriate and Work Abroad Writing Contest, they look for articles
that provide practical information on living and traveling abroad.
They are currently looking for articles on working abroad, studying
and student travel abroad, living abroad, and budget travel.
7) The New York Times Magazine Lives Column
http://topics.nytimes.com/topics/features/magazine/columns/lives/index.html
Search previously published Lives essays, and you'll see that a
lot of them have an international angle--dealing with H1N1 in China,
talking about being a refugee in Eritrea and Ethiopia, having a
picnic in North Korea. These topics are all good signs that despite
being a competitive market (they currently receive around 4,000
submission for 52 slots a year), as a writer abroad, you may have a
slight advantage if your essay has an international slant.
8) English Language Publications in Foreign Countries
Many countries have magazines especially written for the expat/English
speaking market. These are perfect publications for a writer to target
because the writing competition will be lower. In Switzerland, for
example, the population of foreigners is about 1.6 million, so there
are several English-language magazines and radio stations.
CREDIT UNION BUSINESS
http://www.creditunionbusiness.com/writers-guidelines.html
---
The tone of Credit Union BUSINESS is professional, but not
stuffy. The "new guard" of credit union executives is younger
and are probably as familiar with "... for Dummies" books as
they are with The Wall Street Journal. Again and above all,
our articles must provide our readers with information that
they can immediately put into action. The ideal Credit Union
BUSINESS writer has some experience with credit unions, or at
least banks. However, this is not absolutely essential. The
ability to understand our readers (The C Level credit union
executives) and to appreciate and explain how information from
other industries relates to credit unions will often be sufficient.
