THE WELL-FED WRITER

In less than four months, Peter Bowerman built a lucrative
"paying-all-the-bills" commercial writing practice:
writing for businesses, large and small and for hourly
rates of $50-$125+ (and did so with NO industry contacts,
previous paid writing experience or writing training.

No, this isn't a huge course on how to get rich writing.
It's a reality story, condensed in a book that teaches
you how to do the same. For less than $20, grab the
know-how that many pay hundreds of dollars to learn.

THE WELL FED WRITER

Read this note from a FundsforWriters reader after reading
this ad:

Hope-
Accolades well deserved. Peter has mentored me and always been there for me. While maybe not a big glossy publication writing fan, his words and writing give you
hope and courage to live and work this life. When you make that cold call, attend that
first client meeting, send that estimate within 24 hours or complete and submit that
project to the client, you are not -- nor have you ever been -- alone when it comes to
Peter Bowerman.

His mantra? "If I can do it, you can do it." Writers need each other. Here it applies.

BLOGGING NO-NOs

I'm borrowing a few of these rules from Sonia Simone, the
senior editor of Copyblogger.com . Some of these lessons are
common sense, others should be. But most of us have blogs these
days, and those who don't are pondering whether they need one.

Know what makes a meaningful blog. You don't want a blog
just to have one. It needs a theme, purpose and take-away
value. Who cares what you had for dinner? Do people really
want to know what your children did lately, unless your blog
is strictly a family communication tool? Sure your daughter's
Halloween costume is adorable, but is that snippet of writing
worth other people's minutes in a day filled with many other
stops and obligations, online and off?

In a way, a blog is a window to you. Some use it like a memoir.
The truth is, a memoir is a hard work to sell. Unless you have
a remarkable, uncanny ability to project your life in a way
that takes away someone's breath, the bottom line is...
who cares?

Know these common blogging mistakes:

1. Taking more than you give. Don't sell instead of filling
your customers' needs. Even if you have a product to sell,
make sure your readers leave with more than they paid for.

2. Not updating regularly. This lack of effort reflects on
your respect for the readership. At least two times a week
   is decent.

3. Fast writing without much thought, just to make a post.
You know what I'm talking about. No one knows better than
the writer himself when his writing is lame, and he writes
   just to fill up space.

4. Copy-catting. Be unique, don't copy someone else's blog.
You want to be known for you, not the shadow of someone
else. If you're serious about your blog, also consider a
different background that isn't a standard template offered
   to millions of other bloggers.

5. Don't write about a topic that isn't appealing to the
masses. If a thousand people wouldn't be interested, don't
blog about it. A good sign of this flaw is lack of comments.

6. Over writing. Keep it to the point. I try to keep blog posts
under 300 words. From personal experience, I know that
a long post won't be read. I usually stop around 100 words.
I'll stop at 300 words if it's interesting. I'll read the
entire post if it's short or if it's phenomenal. Few fall
into the latter category . . . very few.

Tweeters often retweet great blog posts. And great bloggers
often tweet. Blogs can contain fantastic writing, trigger
wonderful writing ideas, and educate with an entertaining
twist. Always be on the lookout for a few good blogs. Reading
blogs equates to reading the paper, if you take the time to
find those of quality. Once you recognize what you like,
note the strengths of the author's work - that magic that
keeps bringing you back.

WORDS OF SUCCESS

"Little progress can be made by merely attempting to repress

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Hope:

WOW! You hit on a good subject today (re: Senior Writing Markets).
I'm a short story writer and I write primarily about the 50 and
over crowd. I also believed there would be a market out there for
"Senior Stories." I was most fortunate to submit a story to the
ezine "thesquaretable.com" and have it accepted. The story is
about two 80 year olds parked on the side of a road in Austin,
TX and the gentleman asks the woman to marry him, even though
they only know each other for two weeks. Since then that story
found it's way to acceptance in the Silver Boomer Book,*This
Path*, a recommendation from you, by the way, and...with a bit
of a rewrite, will be coming out in an anthology, *Echoes Across
the Blue Ridge*, to be in my hands around Dec. 15th. That's three
spots for one story. Also, I've had a memoir story about 1950 at
the Star Light ballroom/Wildwood, NJ. accepted in Patchwork Path:
Friendship Star anthology and earned $50 to boot. That's thanks
to you, also. My creative non-fiction piece, *Displaced Persons*,
took 2nd Place in the inaugural contest for the Creative Writing
Corner. I received the notification and am waiting for the check.
That story took place in 1953.

Your work, Funds for Writers and Writers Markets....encouraged
me to just go for it. And I've encouraged everyone I know...I
facilitate a writing group which happens to be all seniors, and
I tell them perseverance is the key. This is a long way of saying
THANK YOU for all you do. It has been a banner year for me, 7
acceptances including winning 2nd place in an inaugural competition.
You keep me going and I'm very happy to have someone address this
issue of where do good writers, older writers, go to get their
work published.

Writing for Comics

By Erica Naone

Want to write action-packed stories about superheroes and
battles? Perhaps you'd prefer a poignant small-town narrative?
Today's comics industry has room for both and more, and gives
writers the chance to see their words alongside stunning visuals.
Unfortunately, like most aspects of the writing business, it
can be tough for newcomers to break in. Here are five tips that
could increase your chances:

Look beyond the top two

You may dream of writing the next Fantastic Four comic for Marvel,
or of getting a monthly series with DC's award-winning Vertigo
line, but the reality is that the top two comics publishers
don't take unsolicited submissions. Newcomers have a better
chance of breaking in with smaller publishers. Go to your
local comics store and see what other presses are putting out,
or visit the websites of some of the publishers listed below.

Learn the structure of a comic script

A comic script has more constraints than many prose forms. Only
so much action and dialogue can fit on a single page, and comics
are usually published at standard lengths. Writers must describe
the panels on the page clearly, but leave room for the artist to
make creative interpretations. Get examples of top writers'
published scripts (About Comics' Panel One and Panel Two
collections are a good place to start, and some graphic novels,
such as Neil Gaiman's Marvel 1602, publish script samples as an
appendix). Also learn standard formatting--Dark Horse, a major
publisher, posts basic suggestions on its website.

Create your own characters

There are a few opportunities to write for an existing series,
but most publishers say they want writers to develop their own
characters. This can mean superheroes, but today's comics cover
a much broader scope.

Start out with a mini-series or short story

Publishers are generally reluctant to commit to an ongoing
monthly series from a new writer. Most suggest starting out
with scripts for a mini-series, original graphic novel, or
short story.

Provide your own art if you can

There are publishers that will pair writers up with artists,
but many more are willing to look at proposals only if you can
illustrate your own script or put together your own creative
team. Providing this added value could drastically increase a
proposal's chances.

Comics Markets:

All the publishers below accept unsolicited submissions, but
read their guidelines carefully, as always, and familiarize
yourself with the types of books they put out. There are sharp
variations in what each publisher accepts and how proposals
should be structured. Most negotiate pay and contracts only
after accepting a submission.
