South Carolina, the temperature usually matches the
humidity. You know...90 degrees, 90 percent humidity.
But I adore going outside in my clay-stained sneakers,
ripped jean shorts and tank top, sweating through to
my underpants as I weed, prune, pick vegetables and
strive to make my secluded, three-acre retreat into
a show-place. Even if nobody can find me, I want my
home green and alive.

I took moments in between the chores to enjoy the

newsletter in my Inbox weekly and am encouraged by everything
I read. I have read Hope's articles and the stories of others
who have gussied up the nerve to "go for it!"
I am the local playwright at my church and while I have been
very successful in that area - even surprising myself - with
the scope of work produced, I had not been successful with my
own short pieces and screenplays. UNTIL NOW! As of this
writing I am the official 2nd Place Winner of the Abbey Hill
Literary 2nd quarter contest. Judged, I might add, by Ms.
Hope Clark, herself.
Hope, I just want to say thank you. You have no idea how
much I respect you and look forward to your work. You have
been a constant source of encouragement to me and when I
decided to "go for it" I knew the outcome would be positive.
Lastly, I want to say to others reading this newsletter, stay
encouraged and don't give up. If you don't find something in
one newsletter, just keep reading. Something will strike a
chord within you and you'll "go for it". You won't have any
choice because you'll know when it's right.

new technologies. Authors now need an "author platform"
more than ever if they want to get a publishing deal, or
to successfully self-publish.
demonstrates your sales and promotion ability. It essentially
represents the number of people you can reach with your book.
If you don't have a platform yet, don't worry! With Web 2.0
tools and some concentrated effort, you can start building
your author platform now. Traditional marketing still has
its place, but Web 2.0 can get you a global audience more
quickly, it is within your control and is free or cheap.
and if you post regularly on useful topics, as well as
network with other bloggers, you can build an online audience.
Tim Ferriss, author of NY Times Bestseller "The Four Hour Work
Week", used blogging to build readership and also to spread
the word about the book through the blogger network. Try
Wordpress.com or Blogger.com to get started.
through the Internet. You can podcast chapters of your book,
interviews or a talk show and attach them to your blog as
well as syndicate through iTunes. Another NY Times bestselling
author, Scott Sigler, used free podcasting to build a huge
following for his books which resulted in a traditional
publishing deal. Try Audacity software to create and edit
podcasts.
connection. There is no separation between author and reader
now. Blogs and social networks allow for a 2 way conversation,
which helps to build fans of your work. There are so many
networks but Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn are key. For an
example of using Twitter to build and connect with fans,
check out prolific author Neil Gaiman who now has over
600,000 followers on Twitter. He also connects with his
fans via his blog and is a great example of a commercially
successful author who embraces technology.
audio and is now much easier to use. You can video yourself
talking about your book, reading from it or interviewing
others in the genre. You can explain back story, your own
writing journey or do a video blog. Video blogger Gary
Vaynerchuk recently got a 10-book deal with Harper Studio.
He didn't even have a book. They approached him based on
his online platform. Try recording on a Flipcam or webcam
and uploading your video to YouTube.com. You can also use
Windows MovieMaker, available on most PCs. You can embed
the video on your blog and add links to it on the social
networks.
you can build thousands of followers with these few, simple
techniques used effectively. Significant success cannot be
achieved overnight, but with some sustained and focused
effort, you can grow an audience that will impress publishers
and help you make sales. Authors know about persistence and
long-term commitment to the goal. Apply this to trying Web
2.0 platform building and you can achieve success.

at this time, we are not considering poetry or mystery
manuscripts.

literature, religious history, regional history, cookbooks,
