FOR THE UNJOURNALER

This is my kind of journal. Keel's Simple Diary is published
by Taschen. It's for those who stare at blank pages and give
up trying to post intelligent thought day after day. If your
journaling effort is anything like mine, you post about routine
tasks like calling your sister, washing the dog and pulling
weeds. Or else you vent after a fight with someone, then feel
guilty about what you said/wrote, then rip out the page.
Honestly, I have a journal that's been written in and ripped
up until it's missing a quarter of its pages.

I intensely crave to record in-depth idioms to test my free
writing, then fear what someone will think of me when they
read my thoughts after I'm gone. Worse, what if someone reads
them while I'm alive in the next room? Ick.

This diary gives you a jump-start. It's a cross between a
writing prompt notebook and a diary. They start your daily
entry for you. For instance:

"Exposed to harsh criticism, people make an effort to respond
a) with irony
b) too soon, too seriously
c) shocked
d) as cruelly as you let them
e) with fake detachment
f) with a forced veneer of understanding."

Wow, tell me that doesn't dredge up some opinion! No soul
on this planet can bypass that exercise without recalling
a real-life example. It's like the prompt gives you
permission to write about a difficult topic.

Keel's Simple Diary is going on my wishlist. For around
$15, it's a marvelous gift for a writer, writer-wannabe
or person you know who simply needs to unload a little each
day. It goes on sale this weekend.

WORDS OF SUCCESS

"There is a time in every man's education when he arrives
at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is
suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as
his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good,
no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his
toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him
to till."

-- Ralph Waldo Emerson

BE CAREFUL

by C. Hope Clark

At least weekly, someone asks me to broadcast a scam, bad deal,
or questionable publisher. I avoid becoming Preditors & Editors
( http://www.anotherealm.com/prededitors/ ) because I like my
service to be lighter in nature, more positive, a looking-into-
the-light dynamics in lieu of how-people-can-screw-you-over
flavor.

In the last few weeks, however, I've heard from two readers
with genuine concerns I deemed worthy of revelation. The first
reader answered an ad on Craigslist. Listen y'all, be careful
of Craigslist. The problem is they screen very little, so you
have to sift through the posts and become savvy to dodge the
shady deals. Some jobs are cool, but others aren't. Take little
for granted and confirm facts.

<<I recently answered an ad on Craigslist for freelance article
writers. I was asked to write five articles for an upcoming website.
I completed them, and was paid. The woman said they were 'great'
and asked me to write another five articles. I spent time and effort
researching and writing the articles but never received payment.
She has failed to remit payment; she won't respond to my emails.
It looks as though they have decided not to continue with the
site, but they didn't have the decency to inform me of that fact
or tell me not to bother with the articles.>>

LESSON: Sometimes you get screwed on freelance gigs. Sounds
like this website went belly-up and no longer needed the articles.
To avoid a confrontation, they didn't respond to our friend.
Check your hiring source for legitimacy as best you can, but
sooner or later, someone will get the best of you if you
freelance. Just because it's on Craigslist, doesn't deem it
credible. At least she got paid for the first five articles.

Here's another situation that I'd never experienced before.

<<A few months ago, I sent out my children's book manuscript
to 35 different publishers that were listed in the 2009
Children's Writer's and Illustrator's Market book. One of
those companies was Journey Stone Creations. They sent me a
letter, using my SASE, explaining that they were no longer
accepting for '09. As a courtesy, they sent my manuscript to
their sister company, Publish America. I thought that was
great. I made a note of their letter on my list of submissions.

Three weeks later, I received an e-mail from Publish America
stating that they'd have an acquisitions editor contact me
in two weeks. Being the suspicious type, I went to Preditors
and Editors website and found several pages of complaints
against Publish America, including plagiarism.

At this point I was getting a little panicky. I was racking
my brain, trying to figure out how Publish America had gotten
their hands on my manuscript. Then I remembered. I sent an
e-mail to Journey Stone Creations asking why they sent my
story to a POD publisher.

The reply was this....
"...PA is just an alternate route for authors to get their
stories out." Remember, in  their letter to me (which I have)
they called Publish America their "sister" company!

My reply was:
"I didn't ask you to do that. I was looking for a traditional
publisher, not a POD publisher."

No reply from Journey Stone creations after that.>>

LESSON: Check out every publishing house before you send to
it, even if it is listed in a market book that you trust.

I wish there was one place to go that announced all the scams,
tricks and deceptions out there. Even if there was, the
shifty deals would morph, redefine themselves and come at
you from another angle. When seeking publishers and publications
for your work, be careful and consider these options:

1. Look for a physical address in lieu of a PO Box.
2. Ask for a contract.
3. Ask for references.
4. Don't jump too soon because someone has asked for your
manuscript. Most scammers prey on writers too eager to
   publish.
5. Ask your writers' groups and friends for feedback.
6. Do a detailed online search for the names, websites and
companies involved, seeking any negative experiences.
People quickly complain in blogs and on forums.
7. Realize that start ups have a higher percentage of
   failure, scams and mistakes.

Good luck and be careful.
