IN THE MEANTIME...

Unemployment sucks. All you keep thinking about is:

1. why did it happen to you;
2. how will you find another job like the one you had;
3. what will you do it you don't find a job right away?

Your worries cycle around in your head, beating each other
up like sneakers in the dryer. Break the cycle.

If you have to be home for an eight-hour day, what can you
focus on AS IF IT WERE A JOB? Where can you invest your
energy besides vacuuming and mowing the yard?

1. Research something you always wish you could. What interest
do you have that you never had time to pursue before? If I
could not write, I would either paint, garden or teach.
What's your list of three?

2. Network online about your new interest. Find others more
talented and experienced than you. Read their blogs and articles
and sign up for their newsletters. Cram all that new information
in your head. Become friends with others with like interests.

3. Educate yourself. Go to tech school, take online classes,
read books, locate professional organizations and local groups.

4. Find a mentor in your new area of interest. The person doesn't
have to be a master gardener or a teacher with a PhD. The person
just has to know more than you and not mind networking with
you.

If you threw yourself into that work effort with the same
vigor as you would an eight-hour employment day, and did it
for six months, imagine how much more savvy you'd be in that
field? Not only would you be smarter, but you'd be more
informed about a new career path.

Same goes for your writing. Invest the energy into it. If
you can't sell what you have, then become an expert in
another area through research, mentoring and networking.
Keep trudging forward.

Diligence makes anything happen...absolutely anything.
Madeleine L'Engle's A WRINKLE IN TIME was rejected 29 times.
H.G. Wells was told his stories were nightmares, horridly
bad and not interesting enough. The Chicken Soup series
received 140 rejections.

And C. Hope Clark pitched to 73 agents over two years before
finding one this week who believed in her mystery series.

NOTE: Next week's newsletter will be delivered late Saturday

has offered her beach house to the family and how could
anyone turn down such an offer!

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Hope,
I am an artist, doing some freelance writing and working
on a novel. Last year, I saw a notice in your newsletter
for the Solas Travel Writing Contest. I had traveled in a
meandering fashion along the Mississippi River for two weeks
in the summer of 2007. I wrote about it, submitted the story
and won an Honorable Mention in the 2008 contest. I was
thrilled because it was the first contest I had ever entered.
Then, later that year, I received a request from Traveler's
Tales for the story to be included in their book "2009 Best
Women's Travel Writing". The book just came out and thrilled
doesn't begin to describe it! Thank you for posting this
newsletter every week and giving us hand-picked opportunities
and information.
Entering the Prenatal Fitness Market
By Leigh Goodwin
The desire for procreation- like sustainable health- will
always be present. One current fitness trend encourages
pregnant women to exercise during pregnancy not just after
their baby is born. Prenatal fitness training continues to
emerge as a trend to assist women with good prenatal health
and comfortable birth delivery.
Prenatal Fitness
Contrary to old beliefs, a pregnant woman who does not engage
in the right kinds of activities may be at risk. Pregnancy no
longer implies that a woman should become inactive. During
pregnancy another life force is placing demands on her organs
so she can benefit by strengthening her body. Common fitness
routines such as light strength training, stretching, swimming,
walking and yoga, with a doctor's clearance, can be used to
improve health before, during and after childbirth.
Market Entry
Healthcare expertise is not required to tackle this topic.
Like other topics expertise comes through interviews and
thorough research. A prudent way to make the initial transition
is to assemble a Q & A piece based on a talk with a prenatal
expert. Fitness Trainers with prenatal clients, Obstetricians,
nurses and pregnancy educators can make sound interview prospects.
Key Writing Topics
Standout by offering compelling solution- based articles on:
Nutrition: Research the nutritional value received from foods.
When a woman is pregnant what she puts in her body will affect
her unborn child because the child gets its nutrients from
everything she ingests. Food tips that both satisfy mommy and
protect the baby are ideal.
Relaxation: Insights that promote relaxation can help to mange
uncomfortable symptoms like nausea and other forms of stress.
Your research is likely to yield a multitude of meditation and
relaxation strategies that are priceless.
Exercise: You may know someone who used exercise during
pregnancy with success or otherwise. Meaningful information
you can share regarding safe activities, safe methods and the
best gym locations is likely to be a hit with editorial staff.
Health: The child's life depends on the mother's health. You
may be aware of a way to safely store hazardous household
products. In this case, collaborating with healthcare
professionals in your own circle can stimulate your creativity
on this health and safety issue.
Beauty: During this time a woman may experience a decrease in
her confidence as she watches her body composition change.
Articles that remind her of her beauty- and that give tips
on enhancing it can be indispensable.
Humor: Humor is important. During pregnancy a woman undergoes
many changes and some of these can make her sad and irritable.
Humorous articles can help her stay uplifted.
Informative prenatal fitness articles can be fun to write.
Whatever direction your research takes remember that prenatal
fitness is a profitable trend whose time is here to stay.
JUNO BOOKS
http://www.juno-books.com/guidelines.html
---
The novel must have a strong female protagonist. To further
clarify: A protagonist is a character or characters whose
intentions are the primary focus of a story -- not a
supporting character, not the hero's girlfriend, not the
main character of volume two in your trilogy which has a
male hero in volume one. It is highly unlikely just changing
the name of the protagonist from male to female will work.
And, no, your novel is not an exception to this rule.
Please note, too, this is a fantasy imprint. Techo-thrillers,
suspense, crime, science fiction, action-adventure, etc.
without an element of the fantastic are not fantasies. Nor
are we interested in Young Adult, teen, or children's books.
We do not want novelettes, novellas, collections of stories,
anthologies, or poetry.
