BIG NOTE...
Trevor Meers, Executive Editor for Midwest Living emailed me
stating he has mistakenly left his call for submissions online.
He is not seeking essays and is amending his web site.

=====
DON'T HIT SEND SO FAST
Ten days ago, FundsforWriters sent a solo ad which spawned a
flurry of emails. You may remember it. As a result, I chose
to remove the solo mailing aspect of FFW's advertising feature.
The nature of the emails proved educational, and eventually
entertaining, once I emerged from the shock.
For several days, the emails jumped down my throat, scolded
me for being unethical, told me the ad was beneath me, and
wondered why I chose to irritate the reader so badly, as if
I stayed up late plotting against readers. Some yelled in caps.
Some unsubscribed. One, a well-known name who sells his own
courses and ebooks, stated "I can't believe you of all people
would endorse them." Yet he's written articles for the advertiser.
For a couple of days, people fussed at me. They forgot what
FundsforWriters did. They forgot the newsletter is free.
They forgot we've been around for almost nine years, doing
everything in our power to ferret out information for writers.
I wanted to quit and just write for me.
Then the tones of the emails changed. Some thanked me for
referring them to the resource. Some had taken the course
and thought highly of it. One had a brother doing quite well
after taking the copywriting course, and she was reading her
course material currently, hoping to do the same.
Some responded with very level heads, saying they did not
like the length of the mailing, but understood how advertising
allowed for a free newsletter. Some said a smaller ad would
work better. The constructive criticism was so appreciated.
Then this one made my day...
Hope, I am sorry the midweek ad did not pan out with the readers.
I am always open to hearing about new stuff. Humans are creatures
of habit, and maybe the ad just threw them. Also, if our darling
Hope had sweetened it up with a wee personal message, along with a
few relative copy markets thrown in, it may have had better
feedback. I would hate to think you were turning down ad dollars.
The least we readers can do, to show our gratitude regarding your
perpetual efforts and generosity, is to deal with the occasional
ad. I don't write poetry, but I would be pretty ignorant to ask
you to list those markets separately in your newsletters! There is
nothing wrong with your judgment. I would feel lousy if my own
comments had caused you any angst.
I wanted to hug her neck! That's an email I'd pay attention to.
Listen, I guess this is a rant of sorts. Think before you
shoot off an email. When I have something serious to say, or
when I'm angry at a mishap or event, I type a snail mail
letter, so it can steep in its juices overnight. That way I
make sure the next day that I really meant those words. Most
of the time I don't.
The Internet can be quite empowering. We say things we don't
mean, knowing full well we'll never meet that person again.
Before shooting off a knee-jerk email, decide whether you'd say
the message to the person's face. Decide whether the matter is
that stupendous. Wonder what you'd feel like receiving it. Then
paint your email in such a way to be palatable to the other side.
You'll get so much more mileage to your words. You'll save face.
And you'll save theirs.
Hope

ARTICLE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Write Yourself a Check
By Gwynne Spencer
The danger of reading Funds For Writers is that you really
do get used to being paid for what you write, to the detriment
of family stories that need to be written before you are dead,
when it is much harder. I had accumulated somewhere in the
neighborhood of 275 pages of notes, titles, punchlines, pieces
of anecdotes, when I started writing my life stories, and the
full fledged stories quickly grew to 400+ pages of unedited
mess. In between paying articles, I would make a stab at it,
but it always got shuffled off as a frivolous project because
it wasn't a paying gig. But as birthday after birthday log-
rolled me, I realized I had to attack this project with the
same diligence I would give any other paying market. So I
decided to pay myself.
Of course, being an editor as well as a writer, I couldn't
pay myself for garbage, so I had to organize all those notes
into something salable. The chunks that developed settled
into categories:
--places I had lived and lived to tell about
--my life in dog years (dog-by-dog)
--people who I hate who have taught me the most
--true stories that nobody would believe
Into each desktop file I sorted all the accumulated bits and
pieces of what I came to think of as the family fruitcake:
great as a gift, even if they don't like it much and no matter
how bad it is, you just cannot throw it out. The projects began
to take on shape, almost the way a nonfiction book (my genre)
begins to form once you've got enough bones for the "muscles"
to attach to.
But then I hit a snag. I just could not force myself to spend
ten hours a week on these stories when other projects (i.e.
paying) were beckoning. That's when it hit me. I needed to think
like a publisher. So every time I had written usable, editable,
perhaps even publishable text longer than 2,000 words, I put $20
in my account-- an empty cashew jar from Costco.
Every time another chapter rolled out, another twenty bucks went
into the jar. The effect was amazing. I started thinking how I
would spend the fortune that was piling up. It was REAL money.
I thought of my beloved old nightgown that was being held together
by seven molecules and even though I hate to shop, I had to
replace it soon. I thought of the new laser printer that would
replace my WalWart inkjet monster. I began to even think of more
indulgent items like a weekend writing retreat at a local
butterfly farm, Wings of Wonder, and envision even a weekend at
the Oregon Writers Colony retreat house at the edge of the ocean.
Every time two thousand words (or more) came marching out onto
the page and were edited, they were paid for in cold hard cash
until the first "book" was done--stories of the summers spent at
the shore. And just like the kick in the pants you get from opening
a check from a publisher, opening up my Cashew Cash was an
adrenalin rush. So now I've got 100 pages of summer stories done,
done, done and a new pastel blue all cotton Eileen West nightgown,
and serious motivation to rip into the next part of the memoirs.
I might even give myself a raise.
