WRITING SECRETS . . . FROM TEACHERS
I have this love-hate relationship with public education,
with my biggest complaint being with colleges. As a whole,
this country shortchanges its young proteges, teaching to
standardized tests and not fully educating the gifted and
the remedial student.
I hear you. Many good teachers float in the sea of academia,
and I tip my hat to them. As a matter of fact, I admire them
so much that I read www.teachermagazine.org . A recent article
by Gail Tillery caught my attention in the latest email edition.
This seasoned educator offered words of advice in "Teaching
Secrets: Take Charge of Your Classroom," and a revelation
hit me. These suggestions apply to writers, too.
1. What happens on the first day will happen on the last day.
Teachers must decide on a class management plan from day
one of the school year. Know the day's agenda. There's no
playing it by ear or students take charge. Writers must
have a plan as well or email, blogs and newsletters take
over the day.
2. You are the king or queen of your room.
Students don't learn without direction. They need parameters
regardless of how hard they grate on teachers' nerves.
Writers, too, need to direct their students...their stories.
Publication doesn't drop in their laps. They must make it
happen.
3. Act the part.
Tillery tells young teachers to take down Facebook and
MySpace so the line isn't blurred between student and
teacher. All those college parties and spring break
festivities reflect on credibility and maturity. While a
writer needs his MySpace for networking and promotion,
he needs to remember the image he wants to project. No
telling what agent or editor will wander through those
pictures and off-the-wall comments that have nothing to
do with writing and everything to do with unfavorable
behavior.
4. Realize you are a public figure.
You are a writer just like a teacher is an educator in
every arena. Church, the ball field, online chatrooms,
forums, clubs, you name it. If you expect the public to
support you, you have to become a public figure. Every
and anything can backfire on sales and your future.
5. Let go of your need to be liked.
Respect is more important. Publishing isn't about being
liked. It's about being able to write. Get over the
rejection or find another profession.

ARTICLE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Go Figure
by Skip Maloney
I think the fact that the urge to write is universal and as
old as cave drawings by human beings who never had to worry
about re-booting a system to finish the work, speaks to a
hidden measure of inspiration for all of us who ply this
trade. Point being: never question your innate ability to
tell a tale or its significance to your fellow human beings.
It is an integral part of who we are and each time the urge
to put pen to paper (finger to keyboard) strikes, you should
give in to the urge and do it. Probably one of the few urges
left that doesn't come with an FDA warning or a 12-step
program to suppress it.
Not five minutes ago, I received a phone call from a friend
who's been taxed with a presentation assignment that will
encompass a degree of writing and the first thing she asked
me was "What do I write about?" One tries to suppress another
innately human urge to bark back "How am I supposed to know?"
altering it slightly to ask, "What do you want to write about?"
It's at this juncture that a lot of would-be writers stumble
and never quite get themselves off the canvas to keep trying.
As simple as it seems - write about what interests you - it
can often set up a circular thought pattern that arrests
development of an idea. "Well, I like to knit, but a lot of
people like to knit and a lot of them are already writing
about knitting, so who's going to care about what I have to
say about knitting, so back to the drawing board with what
do I want to write about." You should intervene in that
process, altering it to read, "Well, I like to knit and
there are a lot of people who like to knit, so where do all
these knitting people go when they want to read something
about knitting and how do I get there?" This should lead you
to a variety of options, the simplest of which is your garden
variety Internet search under the word "Knitting." Subscribing
to this newsletter doesn't hurt either.
The other path to answering the initial question regarding
what to write about is one that requires a degree of self-
confidence in one's own ability. It changes the question from
"what" to "for whom," and establishes as a premise that you
can write about anything that any editor from here to
Cucamonga wants you to write about. I'm a little more
mercenary when it comes to answering the common question of
"what do I write about?" Anything anybody will pay me to
write about.
I've written an essay for a PMS issue of a women's magazine
(Underwired), about kiteboarding in Wrightsville Beach, NC
(Wrightsville Beach Magazine), and am at work on a tale about
a collaborative effort between labor and management in the
sheet metal industry (Partners in Progress). I found the
first assignment in this newsletter, the second, locally
(Wilmington, NC) and the third, through an unexpected
contact with a friend in the board game hobby. Go figure.
Take those two words separately as a bridge between your
desire to write and the opposite shore where you're actually
doing the work.
Go (move, get off your hindsight).
Figure (what you need to do).
PROGRESSIVE
http://www.progressive.org/mag_guidelines
---
We strive to expose corporate malfeasance and governmental
wrongdoing. Detail the problem, relying as much as possible
on public documents and on interviews. Use plenty of quotations.
Be sure to give fair comment to the corporation, government
agency, or individual you are covering. Payment: $500-$1,300.
Electoral Coverage Report on a current electoral development
(e.g., an interesting candidate or ballot initiative) that
has national implications. Do not choose the most obvious cases,
like the presidential race. Look for something more out of the
way. The key is to do reporting, and not just cogitating.
Payment: $500
Social Movement Pieces Find a crucial event or trend in the
labor movement, the GLBT movement, or in the areas of racial
justice, disability rights, the environment, women's liberation,
and report on it. Use plenty of quotations. Payment: $500
Foreign Policy Pieces We tend to favor pieces with a U.S.
angle (either corporate or U.S. policy). But if there is a
development of huge moral or ethical importance (e.g., the
Rwandan civil war, or the global AIDS crisis), where the U.S.
role may not be paramount, The Progressive would like to cover
it. Remember to get the quotes and provide the color (on-the-
ground observations). Payment: $500
Interviews Every month, The Progressive does a long Q&A with
a writer, activist, political figure, or musician. We prefer
to interview people who are widely known, though we also try
to draw attention to individuals who are doing especially
worthwhile work. We've done more than 200 interviews, so
check with us first to make sure we haven't interviewed your
subject yet. Payment: $500
AQUARIUM FISH INTERNATIONAL
http://www.fishchannel.com/writers-guidelines.aspx
---
If you have some experience with the fish you wish to write
about, or a particular type of tank setup, that's the best
place to start. Long-term success with keeping fish is great,
and a track record of successful breeding efforts is even better.
This type of experience is much preferred over an author who
simply scans a book or does some brief research on the Internet
before churning out an article. What should you write about?
Topics could include a particular fish species, a family of
fishes, how-to articles about setting up specific types of
tanks, reef tanks and their occupants, personal experiences
with tropical fishkeeping (provided there's a lesson to be
learned from the article), fish diseases, filtration hints,
feeding tips, invertebrates (both fresh- and saltwater), ponds
and pond fish and anything else that has to do with the
fishkeeping hobby, both salt and fresh (or that interesting
in-between world of the brackish dwellers). We generally pay
$400 for a 2,000-word article, less for shorter pieces; we
normally do not run articles shorter than 1,000 words or
longer than 2,000 words in our monthly magazine.
