SO MAKE A CHOICE
Bob Perks publishes "I Wish You Enough," an almost daily
resource of motivational "essays, parables and rare moments
of clarity." One of his stories motivated me to write this
editorial, and as usual, Bob was gracious enough to let me
spin off from his thoughts.
I recently received a remark from a fellow writer in a critique
of my novel. The remark was more about the political correctness
of the piece than the writing, touching upon morality. A defensive
anger flew through me as the conversation diverted from my writing
to what is proper in today's world.
Time is so precious to me, and this deviation from the task at
hand ticked me off. As a result, I ranted and stewed to a couple
of friends (and hubby) and lost even more time. A thoughtful
email from a close friend put things into perspective, telling me to
let it roll off my back and move forward.
So, I started thinking about the strengths in my novel. I also
added two sentences to the story, minor changes that annulled
the concern that catapulted the original discussion. I chose to
be proactive and positive instead of wallowing in the negative
and getting nowhere.
We have a choice how we address any matter - from a situation
as huge as death to a moment as tiny as rain on your picnic.
We can be thankful or we can be frightful, angry or depressed.
We can move forward, or we can stall.
I thought I had positive down pat. This one incident showed me
that dark clouds can slip in when we aren't watching.
After reading my friend's email, and after ranting to my
husband, I stopped cold as I stood in the middle of the den
floor, interrupting my spouse's movie. I didn't have to feel
like this. So I quit, went back to my study, and focused on
how to be my best, not how to get the best of someone else.
As Bob would say, we can "choose to see the joy in life or
choose to see the sadness." We can feel hopeless or hopeful.
Gracious, you'd think I'd understand clearly something so simple,
especially being named HOPE.

stories, please visit http://www.IWishYouEnough.com

ARTICLE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A LESSON IN PATIENCE
Hi Hope,
I am a children's elementary librarian and sideline freelance
writer when time allows. Last summer, I wrote an article for
a market you listed in Funds for Writers. I studied articles
on the magazine's website, then came up with a slant for a
piece on attracting kids to a particular medical practice office
through children's books and PR marketing. (Keep in mind, I
know nothing about medicine.)
The editor gave me a green light with a very short three-week
deadline. I worked diligently on the article and kept him
updated on my progress. It was an uphill battle with this
particular editor all the way. He complained about my e-mail
service provider, and insisted I sign-up for his. He criticized
the method for sending attachments via- e-mail; he demanded
quotes from several sources; he wanted pictures (specific
instructions on how to send them and pixel sizes); he wanted
photos of the sources, only "head shots" not head and chest
shots. He complained about my bio, and the list goes on.
Not once did he comment about the article's content or style.
I reached the point where every e-mail from him ruffled more
of my feathers, but I politely responded to every single demand,
criticism or heady comment he sent my way. Sometimes I'd allow
myself a day or two to "cool down" before responding. It was
indeed a lesson in patience!
The article was submitted. No acknowledgement, no thanks, no
further peep from this doctor/editor. I assumed I would never
hear from him, since he gave me so much grief. I never
inquired about the article status. I simply took him off my
back burner. Interestingly, six months later, I received a
check for $150. No note, no obvious indication of where it
came from, except it was for publication in a January 2008
issue. I put two-and-two together, and figured it must be for
the magazine article I wrote.
After a month of waiting for a copy of the article, I finally
decided to take the bull by the horns. I e-mailed the editor,
thanking him for the check, and politely asked if he might
kindly send me a copy of the magazine that my article appeared
in. Surprisingly, he agreed. Very recently, I received my
contributor's copy. I quickly looked over the table of contents.
My article had been beautifully published - almost word for word
as submitted.
Bottom line for writers - always be polite, always be
professional, don't be pushy yet don't back down on your
convictions. I really think this editor finally published
my article because he couldn't "get my goat" no matter how
hard he tried. I have had numerous articles published, but
never have I dealt with anyone with the likes of this man's
personality.
I do feel a major "professional" victory was won. My confidence
in dealing with difficult people has certainly been boosted,
and your newsletter market listing paid off!
