PULLED AWAY FROM WRITING

Nothing makes me want to write more than to have it taken
away from me. Isn't that how life goes anyway? You want what
you can't have?

Last week, the weather turned into springtime mode. I grabbed
hubby, my shovel, my wheel barrel and took off into the yard.
We call it a yard. It's 2.6 acres. My hubby calls it Stalag 309,
the 309 taken from our address. He jokingly addresses me to
the neighbors as the Commandant.

For eight straight days, we hit the yard. We ordered 22 tons
of topsoil, created a concrete walled flowerbed, dug up
bushes that weren't doing well and replaced them, saved
the old ones in a make-shift nursery, and so on. Lots of
moving dirt, digging up, turning a shovel and planting.

Each day I dragged myself in, my muscles fussing at me.
But after a shower, I darted into my study. I typed and
typed, wrote and wrote. Throughout the winter, I had long,
straight days of writing. Now I was trying to meet deadlines
before my eyes shut and my head landed on my keyboard,
exhausted from my gardening.

Ideas came to me, stories developed, and I didn't dawdle
reading email. I skipped the junk mail and focused on the
mission. Talk about productive!

Sometimes losing what means most to you can make you want
it more. That's what happened to me. It became a race for
me to get to my keyboard and write. By day nine, my body
screamed for a break. So for two days I wrote, letting the
pollen coat everything and the bushes I'd planted take root.

However, I catch myself now looking out my window...watching
the birds, seeing a plant that needs pruning, a bed that
needs mulch...and something nags at me to get back in the
yard.

Some days we just want it all, huh?

JOIN THE FAMILY

By C. Hope Clark

I search high and low for magazine guidelines, going to the
actual magazine web sites and researching for the elusive
rules and desires of editors. I adore it when I hit upon a
family.

Publishing companies often publish entire families of magazines.
Usually the pay rate is similar if not exact from one periodical
to the next. For the freelance writer, this is a goldmine.

Moose River Media focuses on readers who make a living at
using their green thumb. They publish trade publications like:

Turf
SportsField Management
Landscape Construction
Tree Services
Forest Products Equipment
Farming
Growing

What is so marvelous about families is that they are tight,
they talk amongst one another, and they pass writers back
and forth. If you write for one, you can ask that particular
editor to speak on your behalf and get your foot in the door
of another. I wrote several pieces for Turf Magazine then had
the opportunity to cover a piece on fountains. The editor
referred me to Landscape Construction where I completed that
fountain story. This family pays around $300 per article and
prefers you include pictures.

Ogden Publications specializes in self-sufficiency, rural
lifestyles and memorabilia. What I love about Ogden is that
all the writers' guidelines are posted on one page. In this
family's case, each publication pays differently, from $25
to $300.

Mother Earth News
Natural Home
Herbs for Health
The Herb Companion
Grit
Capper's
Motorcycle Classics
Farm Collector
Gas Engine Magazine
Steam Traction

Talcott Publishing features trade magazines for professionals
in retail, food service, and food preparation industries.
It's easy to see how being able to write for one can qualify
you to write for all. Payment runs around $350 for features.
The magazines include:

Baby and Kids
Chef Magazine
Chef Educator Today
Fancy Food and Culinary Products
Giftware News
Home Fashion and Furniture Trends
Pizza and Italian Cuisine

Let's jump into the top shelf category of magazines. The
Meredith Corporation might not mean anything to you, but these
magazine names should. Payment varies with some paying up to
$1/word. Many have front or back page essays, too.

Better Homes & Gardens
More
Ladies Home Journal
Parents
Country Home
Midwest Living
Successful Farming
Family Circle
Fitness
Traditional Home
Quilting
Baby
Scrapbooks

So the next time you look at writers' guidelines, scroll
all the way down to the bottom, in the tiny font. See if
you can tell who publishes that magazine. Sometimes that
link can open a wealth of potential into other publications.
Marry one family member and you'll be amazed at how the
rest of the family will take you in.

THE FUND FOR WOMEN ARTISTS
http://www.busyfingers.com/fundwomen/grants.html
---
The Fund for Women Artists has started a fiscal sponsorship
program for selected women artists. To qualify for this
program, a project must be led by women and must have the
potential for artistic excellence. Also, the artists must
prove that women will receive at least 51% of the fees or
salaries paid. The Fund for Women Artists generally cannot
sponsor a project that will be seeking funds from a source
where we already have a proposal pending. Here is how the
sponsorships work. The donors make their checks out to The
Fund for Women Artists. We process the checks and issue
thank-you letters to the donors for their tax records. As
the project moves forward, The Fund for Women Artists
reimburses the artists for expenses, maintains the books,
and prepares any needed tax forms. The Fund for Women Artists
deducts 5% of the total donations as a service charge for
handling the sponsorship.
