DETERMINING YOUR VALUE

Often I see new freelance writers asking members of forums and
list groups how much to charge for their services. The suggestions
range all over the planet! I tell them to determine what they
are worth per hour.

"Oh no," they exclaim. "I don't want to charge by the hour.
That scares people away."

I'm not saying to CHARGE by the hour. I'm saying CALCULATE
what you are worth per hour. For instance, if someone offers
you $60 for an article, and it takes you three hours to write
the article, you're worth $20/hour.

Look at the projects you've written. Determine what you
ultimately charged per hour. Include mailing, typing, research
and composition time. Let's say your goal is to make $20/hour.
If someone asks you to write a 500-word piece for $60, you
allot three hours to that article from beginning to end.
Full-time that's $41,600 per year. Considering the deductions
you are allowed as a self-employed entrepreneur, that calculates
to much more than the individual grossing $41,600 in a 9-to-5
job.

You don't have to tell the client how much you think you're
worth. Reducing work product to hourly value can chase off
business. Especially if their hourly rate is less than yours.
But just knowing a figure allows you to negotiate and readily
accept or decline projects.

My husband is a private investigator. His rate puts mine to
shame. However, whether he's driving to a meeting, sitting
in his car observing, or interviewing someone in jail, he
gets his hourly rate. Attorneys do it. Tutors do it. Mechanics
and plumbers do it. They may quote you a flat fee, but in
their minds they've calculated the value of their worth.

You have a value, too. Calculate it. Then stick to it.
Learn to respect yourself. Knowing that value gives you more
confidence in bidding for gigs or accepting a publisher's
offer.

    Hope

READING AND WRITING

By C. Hope Clark

Sean Lindsay writes a critical yet often in-your-face, truth-
ridden blog entitled 101 Reasons to Stop Writing. When I first
glanced at the site, I chuckled at his humor, then realized he
was serious on so many levels. Occasionally, I agree with him.

He recently gave an interview on the website Jossiping.
http://www.jossip.com/jossiping-with-sean-lindsay-20080108/2/
He describes his blog: "...intended as an intervention, a way
to help bad writers shed the layers of hubris and denial that
cloud their ability to perceive their awfulness."

When asked about all the people who crave to write the Great
American Novel, he pulls no punches.  "Harper Lee, author of
To Kill a Mockingbird...would certainly be on the shortlist
for the Great American Novel if such a list existed. Lee is a
perfect example of a writer who did the honourable thing after
producing her masterpiece - she stopped writing. She didn't
whittle away at her reputation on increasingly erratic minor
novels..."

But this is the quote that seriously got my attention...
"The biggest problem facing the publishing industry today is
that the people who should be buying books are instead trying
to write them." That got me thinking.

How many books did you read in the last year? I mean from cover
to cover, studying the story, character development and voice,
analyzing how the book was structured and written? The Jenkins
Group researched the literacy of America. You may have seen
these comments before:

-33% of high school graduates never read a book after   graduation
-42% of college graduates never read a book after graduation
-80% of US families did not buy or read a book last year
-70% of US adults have not been in a bookstore in the last five years
-57% of new books are not read to the last page

Yet, 80% of American adults want to write a book.

You cannot write well without reading. It's a stone-cold fact.
You absorb the craft as you read it. The more you read, the
better your ability to write. If you do not have the need to
read, you don't have the right to write.

There's nothing wrong with deciding you are not a serious
writer. I'm not a serious painter, but I've painted landscapes.
I'm not a serious dog groomer, but I clipped a poodle for
ten years. I've treated illnesses, cuts and headaches, but I
wouldn't dare try to be a nurse or doctor.

This is your crossroad. If you are a hard-nosed writer,
get your act together. If you are not, then that's perfectly
fine. You probably have your head organized better than the
others who profess to be serious. You're probably more suited
to another skill - one that a zillion other people wouldn't
dare tackle or claim to do half as well as you.

Your passion should be passionate, not a passing thought.
We test ourselves throughout life. I once wanted to manage a
skating rink. My sons adored roller hockey, played on teams
and traveled the southeastern US in competitions. I wanted
to run the local rink, hold tournaments and enjoy watching
little girls with pink pom poms on their skates. That was a
phase. I researched it, studied business plans and dreamed
about the hockey gear and dance skates I'd carry in the
gift shop. Luckily I moved on before I invested money in
the venture. My boys outgrew hockey and the community rink
closed due to lack of business.

We do that our entire lives - test the water, ponder new
directions. That's good. That energy shows we're alive.
You may move on from writing, spotting another opportunity
on the horizon that may serve you better. Just don't drop
a quick book or two in the glutted Amazon market on your
way out.

I want you to write...and I want you not to write. It all
depends on what you were meant to do. I'm just glad I didn't
leave my name and reputation on the unlit marquee of a
boarded-up rink.

BIO
C. Hope Clark has wanted to raise dogs, oil paint, live in
the mountains, earn a masters in government, build a skating
rink, run a restaurant, jog a marathon and write a book
about grants. She's done none of these things. She's
researched lots of adventures and done no more than ten
percent of the items on her list. But she's learned what she
does and doesn't really want. She wants FundsforWriters,
mystery novels, dachshunds and lake living...oh yeah, her
husband and sons. www.fundsforwriters.com
