HOPE'S HOPE

Well, the results are overwhelming. For some reason you guys
like seeing my mug on the newsletters and the website. One
lady put it in perspective saying that correspondence is so
cold these days that seeing a face behind the information is
warming and interesting. Another said she's noticed since she
started posting her picture with her material that fewer
people had the nerve to bash her. Once people put a face with
the name and writer, it was harder to criticize.

The Internet makes us behave in odd ways. For some reason the
tool that allows us to reach more people in the shortest amount
of time, makes us think we are not seen when we do it. If we
could sit in an auditorium and look out over the sea of people
equivalent to the number that reads our chats, forums, email
and blogs, we'd be phenomenally more careful in our choice of
words.

There are few topics of personal interest I'd broadcast across
the web for fear of alienating those who thought differently.
Since FundsforWriters is an entity about writing, those topics
involve getting paid instead of writing for free, being leery
of many self-publishing entities, and making time to write.
My politics, religion and views on global warming remain
hidden in my personal realm, to be brought out in the proper
settings and the voting booth.

Snippy opinions in a list serve might reach the desk of an
agent when she Googles your name. Some young people are
learning that their ample opinion can land on a potential
employer's computer as easily as the guy down the hall.
As writers, we preach it all the time. Words are power.
That doesn't mean that GOOD words are power. It means all
words - the nasty, the pretty, the hateful, the empowering,
the inspiring, the joyful and the sad.

My suggestion...if you cannot write upbeat, then write with
a constructive criticism, respectful of the other person or
persons, since nothing online can be guaranteed to be read
by one. Bashing someone only makes enemies.

Pundits are one thing. They write to general debate. But if
you are writing mysteries, romance, magazine features, poetry
sci-fi, children's stories or even copywriter material, be
careful. We've seen political candidates and famous individuals
erode years of commitment with a single misspoken word.

It's easier to hit delete and unsubscribe than it is
to unwrite hurtful words that may come back to bite you.
Write for the good, for the education, for the betterment
of man...not to take him down.

LOVE AT FIRST BITE!
HOW TO MAKE MONEY THROUGH RESTAURANT REVIEWS

ByJennifer Brown Banks

It was a marriage made in heaven.

An editor friend of a weekly newspaper needed someone to cover
a new, swank restaurant, and the person originally assigned
backed out.  Since I had done work for him before, he contacted
me.

Admittedly this marked new territory in terms of my writing.
But, as my figure will attest, I'm an expert in eating!
You won't find me living a lackluster life of sensible salads
and diet products.   I love grub.  Yep, I'm a meat and potato
gal who enjoys consuming food without counting calories, and
I'm proud of it!  After all, Marilyn Monroe was a size 16.

What I found really cool about this sweet assignment was not
only would I get to dine for free, I was also allowed to bring
a guest.  And did I mention the free booze?

The night of the affair, the evening found me dining at a
beautiful supper club with bold black, red and white decor
with eclectic furnishings.

The cuisine consisted of contemporary small plates and classic
Spanish tapas.  I devoured everything from French chicken breast,
Gorgonzola Au Gratin potatoes, cheese fondue, roasted peppers
with feta cheese, appetizers, and cheesecake for dessert.
It was food fit for a queen!  I ate things I couldn't even
pronounce.  I also had the pleasure of meeting the famous
Jack Brickhouse's lovely wife dining here as well.

My friend who accompanied me for the evening was really
impressed with my "writer's life."

The next day, I simply converted my scribblings to a review
that answered the basic  "who", "what" "when" and "where's".
And for my efforts?  I got paid $40, had great fun, expanded
my writing portfolio, and discovered a new love!

AND HERE'S HOW YOU CAN TOO.

Here is a winning recipe to get you started in food writing.

1). REMEMBER TO EXPERIENCE THINGS THROUGH ALL YOUR "SENSES".
Note the textures of the foods, the colors, the aromas, and
what specifically made some dishes truly palate pleasing.

2). TAKE PLENTY OF NOTES -- Before the alcohol if possible.

3). WEAR COMFORTABLE CLOTHING.  It would probably be a good
thing to wear attire that is not restrictive in nature, or
too tight.  This way you won't have to undo your button under
the table after consuming a lot of food.

4). BRUSH UP ON YOUR ETIQUETTE!  This is no time to be trying
to figure out which utensils to use, or which foods are
considered "finger foods".

5). IF YOU HAVE FOOD ALLERGIES, don't sample new stuff without
knowing the basic ingredients.

6). BRING HOME THE MENU so that you can spell the names of
the dishes correctly, and are able to list all the food
offerings available to the general public.

7). PICK UP A FEW MAGAZINES DEVOTED TO FOOD AND DINING.
Some good ones to thumb through are Bon Appetit, Food Writer,
and Restaurant Reviews.

...And remember to leave your guilt and your diet at the door!

Local newspapers and regional magazines are great places for
your food review submissions.  Also check out WWW.CRAIGSLIST.ORG
and the Writers' Market for more complete listings.
Bon Appetit!
